Start with a clear, current portrait
Choose a recent image that makes your face easy to recognize. Keep your face near the center of the frame, use even lighting, and avoid a distracting background. These are practical presentation tips; the AAMC's published photo page specifically requires an accepted file type, a file no larger than 150 KB, and a centered face.
Keep the photo natural and readable
- Use a sharp original image rather than a small screenshot or a heavily compressed copy.
- Check that the crop leaves the face unobstructed and centered.
- Use lighting that shows facial features clearly without strong shadows or glare.
- Keep the background visually simple so the face remains the focus.
- Avoid filters or edits that make the image differ noticeably from your current appearance.
These suggestions are not additional AAMC requirements. Follow any current instructions shown by your school, ECFMG, EFDO, or MyERAS for your applicant type.
Check the final file
After cropping or exporting, check the actual file you plan to use. The ResidencyHeadshot.com checker reads the selected image in your browser and reports file type and size, pixel dimensions, embedded DPI, and approximate centering. It does not upload your photo to this site.
