ERAS PHOTO / ROUTE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Is an ERAS headshot required?
The current official wording differs by submission route. AAMC’s general ERAS documents page says applicants must upload their own photo in MyERAS. ECFMG’s MyIntealth instructions say, “If you wish to submit a photograph,” use the MyIntealth Applicant Portal. These statements describe different routes; they do not establish one universal rule for every applicant or program.
What can be said from the pages reviewed?
The useful answer is not a single yes or no detached from the application route. The AAMC page uses a mandatory verb for applicants uploading directly in MyERAS. ECFMG’s supporting-documents page introduces the MyIntealth photograph process conditionally. That is a real difference in the published wording, but it is not proof that the systems share one policy or that a portal will accept every application without a photo.
A route label matters because the upload action, the office that handles the file, and the written instruction are connected. A sentence on the MyIntealth page should not be pasted over MyERAS instructions, and the reverse is also true. Neither wording tells us what an individual program may expect outside the general submission steps.
The exact instruction context
| Route described | Official source wording | What the page establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAMC / direct MyERAS photo upload | AAMC’s documents overview says applicants “must upload their own Photo in the MyERAS portal” and names “Upload New Photo.” | The cited AAMC page describes photo upload as a required applicant action in the MyERAS route. | It does not resolve a separate program’s additional document request or an applicant-specific portal exception. |
| ECFMG / MyIntealth for ERAS Support Services | ECFMG writes: “If you wish to submit a photograph, you must submit a digital version via ECFMG’s MyIntealth.” | The cited paragraph makes the photo submission conditional, then specifies how to submit one through MyIntealth. | It does not say that every program or applicant category has no photo requirement in every circumstance. |
This comparison preserves the subject and destination of each sentence. “Applicants must upload” is attached to AAMC’s MyERAS photo step. “If you wish to submit” is attached to ECFMG’s MyIntealth process. Treating them as contradictory universal policies would discard that context; treating them as identical would discard the wording.
A route-first reading map
Use the following sequence to identify which statement applies before interpreting a checklist or an upload screen. This is a source-navigation method, not a prediction about eligibility or an individual application result.
- Name the portal. If the photo action is inside MyERAS, start with the AAMC MyERAS photo/document instructions. If it is inside ECFMG’s MyIntealth ERAS Support Services, start with the ECFMG photograph section.
- Keep the page’s audience attached. The AAMC source describes applicants using MyERAS; the ECFMG source describes the MyIntealth submission path for ERAS Support Services. Do not transfer one route’s wording to the other.
- Separate upload requirements from display or assignment. A requirement to upload a file is not the same statement as assigning it to programs, and a conditional upload paragraph does not answer what every individual program may request.
- Read the current portal message for the account-specific state. The public guidance reviewed cannot see an individual application, and the wording on an upload screen may be more specific to that route or season.
- Preserve unresolved scope. If a general page and an account screen appear different, record each page and the route it names. These public pages do not by themselves prove that every category has the same requirement.
The contribution of this map is its evidence boundary: it links each statement to a portal, keeps mandatory and conditional language distinct, and lists the next unresolved question instead of filling it with an assumption. It does not test a live applicant account or infer a match outcome.
Common questions
Does “if you wish to submit” mean an IMG never needs a photo?
No universal conclusion follows from that sentence alone. It describes the MyIntealth photo-submission step. The page does not say that no program can request a photo or that every applicant category shares this wording.
Does the AAMC page say a photo is required?
The AAMC Documents for ERAS Residency Applicants page says applicants must upload their own photo in MyERAS and lists file requirements. The page names the applicant action; use the current MyERAS portal for any account-specific prompt.
Is uploading the same as assigning a photo to programs?
No. ECFMG’s instructions separately state that a photo must be assigned on MyERAS’s Additional Documents tab to make it available to programs. Upload and assignment are distinct events.
Do these pages guarantee what a program will see?
No. The pages explain submission instructions and the assignment step. They do not provide a live view of a specific applicant’s record or a guarantee about an individual program’s review.
